LWB Introduces the First Diversified E-Payment System for Bus Fares More Choices, More Convenience

Contactless cards and mobile payments are growing more popular. To provide a more convenient means for passengers to pay their bus fares, Long Wing Bus Company Limited (“LWB”) is introducing a diversified e-payment system on the LWB bus fleet. The service will be fully launched on Sunday 24 May, as LWB becomes the first franchised bus company in Hong Kong to provide diversified e-payment services.

LWB started a trial scheme of the e-payment system on 100 LWB buses and seven routes on 15 March. With around 3,000 transactions recorded, the system has been running smoothly in general and the trial scheme has been well received by passengers. Gary Leung, Head of Operational Planning Department, said in view of the growing popularity of e-payment, LWB is introducing the e-payment system to provide more choices for passengers. In line with the Hong Kong Smart City Blueprint, the new system helps keep the industry moving forward.

The diversified e-payment system will be available on the entire LWB bus fleet from 24 May. Passengers need only place a credit card or scan the QR code for easy, fast and convenient bus fare payment. To bring more choices to passengers, the new system accepts several e-payment methods. Besides using credit cards as a payment method, payment may also be made by using e-wallet on mobile devices and smart watches.

The new system accepts the following payment methods:

Paywave payment

Mastercard

Contactless credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay

UnionPay

Contactless credit card sand Apple Pay

Visa

Contactless credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay

QR code payment

AlipayHK

EasyGO

UnionPay

UnionPay app (Passenger Code)*

* Passengers need to switch the app to the location of Hong Kong.

Passengers should place the credit card or scan the QR code to pay the fare instantly when boarding. The reader will make a beeping sound and show “Welcome aboard” to indicate the transaction has been completed. As with other payment methods, five minutes are required between each transaction, so passengers need to wait five minutes before paying the next bus fare.

The reader is preset to adult fares. To enjoy a 50% discount off the bus fare, children aged under 12 and people aged 65 and over should press the button on the top right of the reader. In addition, passengers can join the Bus-bus Interchange Scheme for LWB routes. As the Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme and the Government’s $2 Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Persons with Disabilities do not cover e-payments, passengers are not able to enjoy the subsidy and the concession through the new system.
