The Secretary for Transport and Housing visits KMB Smart Transportation Exhibition Area in 5G Lab

 Mr. Frank Chan Fan, the Secretary for Transport and Housing and Miss Rosanna Law Shuk-pui, Commissioner for Transport, visited the KMB Smart Transportation Exhibition in the "5G Lab" today (July 8). The exhibition illustrates the feasibility of bus safety and services improvement by applying 5G technology and the latest development of renewable energy usage.

Through 5G high-speed data transmission, coupled with Video Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and Big Data Analysis, KMB can further enhance bus services and driving safety in the future, including;

Passengers capacity of bus compartment
Passengers can notice the accurate occupancy status on the next bus immediately through App1933, making journey planning convenient. The technology may improve the operational management;

Number of passengers waiting at bus stops
The bus company can obtain the real-time queuing condition at bus stops, which helps make suitable operations deployment and enhance efficiency;

Placement of sensor in bus termini
Real-time traffic monitoring and analysis in bus termini, and real-time alerts can be issued to bus and other road users to reduce the risk of accidents if a jaywalker is detected;

Internet of Things
To monitor computer systems and mechanical parts on each bus to make appropriate and preemptive maintenance;

Autonomous bus driving
Through 5G technology, Video Analytics, and Artificial Intelligence provides building blocks of autonomous bus driving.

Besides, the exhibition also introduces KMB’s plan to introduce double-deck electric buses, where it expects the entire fleet to be gradually electrified by 2050. At the same time, more than 22,000 solar photovoltaic panels will be set up in bus depots, bus stops and bus rooftops by the end of this year to reduce emissions in Hong Kong.

"5G Lab" is located at Sky100 Observation Deck of the International Commerce Centre (ICC). This Lab aspires to inform the public of the latest trends on 5G’s development and application in Hong Kong, and how the 5G infrastructure will support Hong Kong’s development as a Smart City and a digital hub.
