Recommended hiking routes for Route 96R
Sai Kung is dubbed the 'back garden of Hong Kong', known for its beautiful scenery. Route 96R (Diamond Hill Station ⇋ Wong Shek Pier) is a popular recreational route since it connects the urban area and various popular hiking trails in Sai Kung, such as Tai Mong Tsai, Pak Tam Chung, Sheung Yiu, Pak Tam Au, Wong Shek Pier, and Sai Kung Town Centre. The following two hiking routes for Route 96R are suitable for families and covered by "HYKE".
Wong Shek Family Walk (Route 96R - Suggested alighting point: Wong Shek Pier )
The starting point of the Wong Shek Family Walk is located next to the Wong Shek Pier. It is a family walk only 2 km long and takes about 1 hour to complete. With beautiful scenery along the way, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the mangrove at To Kwa Peng and a sea view at Ko Tong Hau. After climbing to higher vistas, the view widens out and extends to the Long Harbour and Grass Island. The walk is almost flat and wide, and there are many resting facilities in the middle of the way, making the walk exhilarating for the family.
Sheung Yiu Family Walk ( Route 96R - Suggested alighting point: Sheung Yiu )
The starting point of the Sheung Yiu Family Walk is located at Man Yee Road and ends at Sheung Yiu. It is a family-friendly walk only 1.8 km long and takes about 1 hour to complete. Walking along the pathway, Sheung Yiu Folk Museum is reached. It was originally a Hakka village built in the 19th century. Although it is temporarily closed for maintenance work, the lime kiln, a declared monument of Hong Kong, can be seen. The beauty of Po Kwu Wan embankment comes into a broad view when climbing up; mangrove and pier are check-in hotspots. It is meaningful to learn the history of the old village and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
