KMB rolls out Decarbonisation Partnership programme Joining hands with business partners to promote carbon neutrality
To promote Hong Kong’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, The Kowloon Motor Bus Co. (1933) Ltd. ("KMB”) collaborates with our corporate partners by launching the Decarbonisation Partnership Programme to retrofit solar panels on KMB’s current bus fleet. KMB organised a kick-off ceremony to mark the support of the participating organisations.
KMB is committed to promoting green transportation and has laid down the roadmap for upgrading its entire fleet to new energy buses. It has also rolled out various eco-friendly initiatives, including retrofitting solar panels on bus roofs to generate electricity for facilities onboard, replacing the lighting system with lower-powered LED strips and exploring the use of natural fiber composite in the bus body material. It is up to all sectors of the community in Hong Kong to work together to promote the city achieving carbon neutrality. KMB’s Decarbonisation Partnership has invited business partners to collaborate, giving impetus to carbon reduction and energy conservation.
The first phase of the Decarbonisation Partnership has received strong support from 48 corporate partners, covering industries including transportation, banking, catering, bus manufacturing, parts supply, legal support, as well as others (see appendix for details) that help retrofit solar panels on 89 bus roofs.
These solar panels will supply electricity to the ventilation and air-conditioning devices on the bus. When the bus engine stops and the temperature in the saloon is over 35°C, ventilators powered by solar panels will start and vent the hot air inside the bus out, lowering the temperature by 8 to 10°C. Each bus's daily fuel consumption is reduced by 5 to 8%, equivalent to 6 tonnes of carbon emissions per year. Up to 534 tonnes of carbon emissions can be reduced annually on the basis of 89 buses.
A tag with the name of sponsoring organisation and a thank you message will be displayed at the front of the bus compartment to show appreciation for their support of the Decarbonisation Partnership. KMB has also organised a launch ceremony on 1 June for the programme and bestowed certificates on the participating organisations.
During the ceremony, KMB Finance Director Joseph Leung said, “KMB’s eco-friendly initiatives really depend on our partners’ backing. We sincerely thank all companies for recognising and supporting KMB’s environmental protection effrots by providing assistance in finance, planning and engineering.”
KMB is preparing the second phase of the Decarbonisation Partnership and expects to continue working with our corporate partners to contribute toward carbon neutrality in Hong Kong.
